This picture shows the metal case of a Berliner-type microphone, with its upper part cut out. The two terminal bolts are designed both for electrical connection and for mechanical fastening. The membrane under the cover and the carbon cylinder with an enlarged surface due to the of v-shaped insections are well apparent in this picture. The carbon dust transforming speech waves into electric signals is located in the space between the membrane and the carbon cylinder. The characteristic bent microphone horn is absent in this diagram.
