Bell's telephone

Inventory number: T16 84.104.1.
Year of creation: 1877
Location: Hall 1

This picture shows the inner layout of the first Bell's telephone. The same instrument, the forerunner of today's handset, integrated the functions of a mike and a receiver. With this, it has been very troublesome to speak to somebody over the phone because again and again this instrument was to be held either to one's ear or mouth. The horseshoe magnet is integrated in a cylindrical shaft, and the poles of the magnet are connected to soft iron shoes. The coils arranged on the poles appear readily in this picture. The thin membrane made of circular soft iron is placed in front of the coils. It does not need any electric supply.
