Inventory number: T16 83.1.0.
Year of creation: 1882
Location: Hall 1

The 78-line hand-switched telephone exchange (crossbar switchboard) was operated by two persons, standing. When the subscriber turned the inductor on his set, the <<828>>indicator<> in the exchange dropped to reveal the name of the subscriber. The "receiving operator" asked the subscriber for the name of the called subscriber then instructed the "switch operator" to set up the call by inserting the appropriate plugs on the switchboard. The subscribers were connected by inserting two copper plugs into the cross points. The first subscribers were connected to the exchange by a single iron wire, and the earth was used as return wire. In case of storm the subscribers were detached and the service was suspended.
